Petrona y Lidia
Petrona married at only age 15. Her husband was not able to support her, so she began selling huipiles and scarves in a tourist town around Lake Atitlan. She found high demand for her products and began making additional beaded items such as key chains, coin purses, jewelry, and holiday ornaments.
Lidia is one of Petrona’s nine children. She is particularly active in her family’s business. Lidia’s husband runs a store where much of the family’s artisanal products are sold.
Through her business profits, 48-year-old Petrona has been able to support the education of all nine of her children. She dreams that one day they all graduate to become professionals.
