Empower women. Eliminate poverty.

Petrona

Like many girls in Guatemala, Petrona never learned to read or write, but was taught to weave when she was young, so she would be able to make clothes for her family. However, after Petrona married, her husband abandoned her and their children. Left wondering how she could support her children, Petrona decided to use the art of weaving her mother had taught her. Petrona began selling huipiles in the market, and because she lives near a tourist area, she saw high demand for her products.

Today, Petrona has her own tipica store and sells a variety of products including purses, scarves, table runners, placemats, and paintings. Her husband eventually returned, and Petrona taught him to sew and create products to sell in the store. Petrona finds joy in weaving and creating products in the beautiful style of her village. As the President of her Trust Bank, Petrona is empowering other women to create better futures as well.
